5 For Friday — Why I Love Autumn

7 Oct

Blog Post #175

First all I love the actual word “autumn” — the way it looks when it is written, the silent “n”, and the sound as it rolls off the tongue. Seriously, it’s a much better word than, “fall” — at least to my mind.

Summer’s end is always bittersweet. The thought of colder weather, shorter days and frosty mornings make me long for those languid, care-free days of pool parties, barbeques and warm nights around a blazing campfire.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love autumn. The breathtaking colours of the trees’ foliage, rows of pumpkins ripening in the field and crunchy red apples to munch on.

Take a look at my list of “5 things I love about autumn” and tell me, are these on your list, too?

Nature’s palette

The sheer beauty of the trees — the brilliant reds, golds and oranges — at this time of year is enough to bring tears to my eyes. I still love to kick through piles of leaves, feel them crunch under my feet. I always look for that one “perfect” specimen to take home and press between the pages of a book, to find months later and marvel again at its vivid hue.

Weekends at home

Who doesn’t love to snuggle under a warm blanket and curl up on the couch to read a good book, or binge watch the latest Neflix offering. Spending cozy evenings by the fire playing Scrabble with a group of friends or family on rainy weekends.

This apple has a sunprint of a leaf!

This delicious fruit is at its best during the autumn harvest. Firm, red, juicy apples picked right off the tree! What could taste better? My favourites — Ambrosia and Honeycrisp — are both sweet, crisp and great for snacking and baking. Mmmm… apple pie, apple crumble, apple cider…

Butternut Squash anything

Fall is the season of the squash. And my favourite is the versatile butternut. I LOVE anything that has this scrumptious vegetable in it. Butternut Squash soup, roasted butternut squash, butternut squash lasagna — the list is endless. Want some recipes to try? Check Real Simple magazine’s 10 Easy Butternut Squash Recipes.

Sweaters, scarves and boots

Cozy, warm and comfortable — what more needs to be said?

Tell me, what do you love about autumn?
