Goodbye Summer — I’ll Miss You

20 Sep

Blog Post #159

I just realized that the autumn solstice is happening this Thursday — I am stunned that summer is at an end. Don’t get me wrong, it’s been a gorgeous summer — lovely warm weather, blue skies, long languid days filled with friends, family and fun.

And that’s the problem. I’m sad to see summer go. I don’t want to say goodbye to sunny days at the beach, barbeques in the backyard, and warm nights around the fire pit. I miss the early morning sunrise illuminating the horizon and the late setting sun painting the sky.

… but with the fall comes — crisp red apples right off the trees, piles of gold, red and yellow leaves to jump in and woolly sweaters to wear when it’s chilly. Fall is foggy mornings followed by warm afternoons and steaming mugs of tea in the evening by the crackling fire. This season is the time for sauteed Brussels sprouts, butternut squash soup and roasted chestnuts. Autumn brings cozy nights curled up on the sofa with a blanket and a good book and a cat sleeping on your lap. Fall means families gathered around dining tables laden with Thanksgiving feasts and witches, goblins,  and tricks or treats on Halloween.

So long, Summer, it was fun— see you next year! Autumn, I’m ready for the pumpkin patch!

Now, because it’s Haikuesday (and I like poetry), a haiku…

The solstice beckons \ a leaf spirals to the ground  \ summer now a dream
