Blog Post #99
Surrey, BC is the host of the 15th World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Women’s World Softball Championship going on right now until July 24th.
I’m really not a baseball (or softball) fan by any means —I don’t play, I don’t even watch it. However, yestday I was watching the evening news when I heard the best story — a special act of kindness unfolded at the field.
The Kenyan Women’s team had overcome a lot to get to this tournament. Their resources were limited — it took almost everything they had just to get here for this event. They played their hearts out in their first game against New Zealand, and lost.
The New Zealand team noticed that the Kenyan girls had trouble running and catching the ball during the game, because they were wearing ordinary running shoes. They had no money for cleats and other proper baseball gear.
The New Zealand team decided to chip in and buy cleats and bats for the entire Kenyan team!
The Kenyans, after joyfully receiving this magnanimous gift, went on to play even harder in their next game, scoring three runs — their first runs ever. The team didn’t win, but the generosity of a rival team gave the Kenyans renewed confidence, courage and optimism — and their gratitude showed on their happy faces.
Kudos to the New Zealand team — you are the new benchmark for true sportsmanship!
